Home Decorating with Sponging Home decorating with sponge painting can make any boring space look wonderful. Sponging adds the look of texture and depth to any wall and makes any room look as if it were done by a home decorating specialist.
The first step in home decorating with sponge painting a wall or walls is choosing the base paint color of your choice. I prefer semi-gloss interior paint but you can use flat.
Then mix one part of your second color of paint with four parts of faux glaze in a big bucket. The more glaze you add, the more transparent the top coat will be.
Use a damp, natural sea sponge only. Dip it into the bucket of glaze but be sure to blot any excess off.
Start in the corners and work your way out. Tamp the sponge onto the wall in a random pattern, leaving a thin coat of glaze on the surface of the under coat. Do not press down too hard.
Roll the sponge over the surface to get a random look and stand back from the wall frequently to make sure that the whole area has the same amount of undercoat and glaze showing.
One tip I know for home decorating by sponging is to choose a base coat and glaze color that compliment each other. Too much contrast will produce a splotchy, spotted look.
